Annual Financial Report 2021

Brown University closed its fiscal year in a strong financial position, despite the ongoing impacts of the global COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to record endowment performance and success in fundraising.

The Fiscal Year 2021 Brown University Financial Report outlines the expense and revenue factors influencing our financial statements. Brown continues to work thoughtfully to direct its resources in support of its mission of education and research, as well as investment in the students, staff and faculty at the core of a leading research institution. 

As part of each year’s financial report, Brown highlights efforts in one of the themes of the University’s Building on Distinction strategic plan, and this year’s report describes Brown’s commitment to using science and technology to improve lives in an increasingly data-driven world. The report describes the innovative science and scholarship generated by Brown scholars in areas including mathematics, computer science and biostatistics. 

This report provides an opportunity to learn about the impact Brown is making in key areas of the University’s strategic plan, and to learn about the ways in which the University is managing resources in support of academic and operational excellence.

In an increasingly data-driven world, faculty and students at Brown are using data to inform scholarship in fields ranging from theoretical physics to theater arts, while working to make sure that data technologies are deployed for the benefit of communities and society.
The financial report includes an overview of Brown University’s audited financial statements for FY21, as well as reports on the endowment and fundraising.
A small sampling of some of the grants, awards and fellowships of significant impact received across the computational and data sciences at Brown University reflect the acceleration of research and scholarship in this area.
